Welcome and the Basics of Chicago Style

Chicago  (also known as Turabian) Manual of Style another formatting style that maybe used for your student paper.

This style of writing is primarily used by publishing, journalist and has been used in college for history, fine art and theater departments.

Chicago Style uses both footnotes and bibliographies. You can't have one but not the other if you are writing a paper in Chicago Style.

Please consult your instructor on which writing style you maybe using: APA, Chicago or MLA.

General Guidelines

  • Papers should be typed on a computer using a word processing application, and printed out on standard, plain white 8.5 x 11-inch paper.

  • Papers should be double-spaced. Unless it is a block quote then single spaces are fine.

  • Choose a readable 12 pt. font
(most professors request that you use Times New Roman).

  • Leave only one space between sentences.

  • The margins of your document should be set to 1 inch on all sides.

  • Add a header at the top of the document with the title of the paper and page numbering beginning with 1

  • Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin using the Tab key.

  • Use italics throughout your essay for the titles of works. Italics for the purpose of emphasis should be used very sparingly.
